The West Bean
The West Bean is a San Diego-based roastery founded by 2 friends with a true passion and love for coffee, along with the drive to create and bring to you the highest quality hand-crafted coffee on earth.
At The West Bean, we invest our time and money behind the roaster. We use the most sophisticated machine in the world, which in turn allows to craft coffee with no limits. Our master roaster micro-batches each roast bringing to life the hidden characteristics locked behind each bean variety. Micro-batching is a labor of love that doesn’t produce a lot of coffee, but we think when you try The West Bean, you’ll agree it is worth it.
“Not every coffee bean is created equal,” that’s we select, sort and delicately roast only the best green coffee from some of the most exotic places on earth. No single bean goes untouched and each is roasted to its fullest potential, maximizing cup characteristics, freshness, aroma and overall purity of flavor.

MORE ROASTY THAN I HAD (on Honduras Capucas)
fincawhd | Sat, 06/16/2012More roasty than I had anticipated -- the beans seem to be medium-dark. I don't care for this much black, but it is VERY GOOD with cream and sugar.
RICH, BRIGHT MORNING COFFEE (on Brazilian Oberon - N...)
Chamie | Mon, 05/07/2012I'm not typically a fan of South American origins, but this was delicious. It's light and crisp on the tongue, with a hint of tangerine and a lovely cedar smokiness. It's a great wake-me-up coffee and brews up nicely in an ADC, a moka and as a drip coffee. I'll definitely order it again, especially since everyone else in the house enjoys it, too.
SWEET SUSSEX (on Sweet Sussex Espress...)
dpablo19 | Thu, 05/03/2012I've had this at home a few times. As espresso, it is relatively sweet, although somewhat basic in flavor. I think that it is probably perfect for milk-based drinks where its sweetness and chocolate accents can shine.
ETHIOPIAN LEKEMPTI LONGBERRY ESPRES... (on Ethiopian Lekempti L...)
jlarue | Wed, 04/18/2012Brewed with french press. The aroma after grinding fresh put expectations high. Strong fruity almost sour aroma with stron chocolate notes. Unfortunatly after brewing and cupping, those strong aromas mellowed considerably. Still a good cup, but not as pronounced as when ground.
GUATEMALA SANTA ISABEL SINGLE ESTAT... (on Guatemala Santa Isab...)
Lisa | Fri, 04/13/2012My impulse buy. It came in a foil lined brown bag with information about the coffee on the front and the date of roasting on the back. The smell is incredible! Oh if only I could make a perfume out of it! The coffee itself tastes really good. It is strong and tastes good both iced and hot. I did like the hints of chocolate and bet this would taste good if I used it in cooking. This is on my reorder list! Oh and I almost forgot. The shipping is incredibly fast!
GUATEMALA SANTA ISABEL SINGLE ESTAT... (on Guatemala Santa Isab...)
jlarue | Mon, 04/09/2012Very good. I noticed very heavy chocolate notes. I have brewed it with both the french press and the drip maker, the chocolate notes came through heavier with the drip machine. The press pot produces a slightly more bitter cup(I prefered that). Overall a very good cup of coffee. It should be noted I did not brew for espresso, just a cup of coffee.
WEST BEAN BRAZILIAN (on Brazilian Oberon - N...)
jlarue | Wed, 03/28/2012Very good cup. Again I brew with a press. Rich flavor with chocolate overtones. The only negative to me was tha it did not have any one flavor profile/ characteristic that really popped (That may not be a negative for many). To me the benefits of being a single origin and using natural process should allow the unique flavor profile to shine, This is just very well balanced.
BRINGS BACK GREAT COSTA RICAN MEMOR... (on Costa Rican Tarrazu ...)
bobbyaugst | Fri, 03/02/2012Had the pleasure of taking a surf trip to Costa Rica a few years back, and this delicious coffee brings back some great memories of sipping coffee on the coast. Delicious coffee, and authentic Costa Rican brew!
GREAT NEW BREW (on Black n' Tan Coffee)
bobbyaugst | Fri, 03/02/2012Just received our batch of the Black n Tan at my office and everyone here has really been enjoying it. It's a deliciously smooth way to start the morning, with enough kick to get you going in the morning while maintaining a pleasant taste and aroma. All 10 coffee drinkers here at our office give it a "thumb's up"!
ETHIOPIAN SIDAMO COFFEE (on Ethiopian Sidamo Cof...)
jlarue | Tue, 02/28/2012Excellent cup. Brewed with a french press. Complex, fruity floral in the cup. Fresh ground you can smell yeast. For the price compared to other roasters, this one is underated. I will be exploring other coffees from this roaster.
VERY TASTY (on Brazilian SWP Decaff...)
mailbox9307 | Sun, 02/12/2012This is a rich bean and very tasty
EXCELLENT BREW!!! (on Java Jampit)
baugst | Thu, 02/02/2012Awesome coffee!! The Java Jampit had an enjoyable aroma, and was thorough on the tongue without being overbearing. Highly recommend!
DISAPPOINTED (on Tanzanian Peaberry C...)
ifmywordsdidglow8 | Sun, 01/15/2012These beans smelled and tasted burned/over roasted. I ground them, and prepared twice via drip, and once via percolator. Both means resulted in the same, burned flavor. Peaberry is my favorite bean. Therefore, I was quite disappointed. I'd be curious to know if I simply got a bad batch or not.
GREAT TASTE!! (on Ethiopian Sidamo Cof...)
Kim C Abney | Sat, 01/14/2012Great taste!!
PERFECT BALANCE AND FLAVOR (on Tanzanian Peaberry C...)
Dyanatthelake | Wed, 01/11/2012Im impressed beyond words.. Aroma richness with a sharp tangy cocoa bite Im not sure if these are coffee word descriptions but it's what I am feeling You will not be disappointed
BEST FLAVOR AND FRESHNESS (on Brazilian Oberon - N...)
Dyanatthelake | Wed, 01/11/2012I stumbled across this coffee while in San Diego a few months ago I loved the flavor, aroma and craftmanship of the selective bean and roasting process. I contacted the company to see if I could buy it online.. I am never letting this coffee get away. I have ordered it online and from roasting date to my front door is literally a week or so away!! I have never experienced this before. The company suggested other roasts and I am amazed at the variety and complexity of each bean.. I am so darn picky about my coffee Thank you so very much for this heavenly experience
1 POUNDER (on Guatemala Santa Isab...)
intrepid510 | Tue, 01/10/2012Solid espresso and a good coffee. This is one of the better single origin espresso that I have had, it's a very balanced espresso. I would say it's a nice chocolate sweet taste, with a nice bite. Does really well milk and with sweets, hold up well. It should be noted that it's a full pound of coffee and not a 12 oz bag, which is nice!
MMMM...CHOCOLATE (on Brazilian Oberon - N...)
themasterbrewer | Mon, 01/09/2012If you like chocolate, this Brazilian is a great pick. It has a cocoa powder richness that is very enjoyable. Even though it has a darker roast than I'm used to, it was right on for this bean. The West Bean presentation is the perfect combination of hand-crafted and professional.
COMPLEX (on Ethiopian Sidamo Cof...)
themasterbrewer | Mon, 01/09/2012I really enjoy a complex bean, and this Ethiopian hit the spot. Fruity and a light roast, which I think brings out the character of the coffee. Tried it as straight up espresso and with the Aeropress. I have enjoyed several coffees from the West Bean.
BAGUS! (on Java Jampit)
YuleeBoyz | Thu, 01/05/2012Bagus means "Very Good" in Indonsesian and so is Java Jampit. 1 pull and I was instantly transported to a remote beach in Bali. Far away from the hectic streets of Kuta where large white men are accosted, fondled, and pick pocketed. A perfectly balanced roast of epic proportions. When life gets too hectic, brew some Jampit and prepare to be transformed... I give this my highest rating!
