TOO MILD (on Chazzano's Ethiopia ...)
bctr1998 | bctr1998 | Thu, 10/27/2011Chazzano is an excellent roaster. The coffee was delivered within 4 days of our order and it was all fresh. The Harrar was too mild for our taste. However, we did find that a finer grind than we normally use in our french press gave a fuller flavor. It did not have a berry flavor like many other Ethiopian coffees.

xprzzo | xprzzo | Fri, 02/04/2011Harrar like it should be. A full city roast that really is still a full city and not an oily Vienna like you would receive from many other roasters. Arrives in good packaging with de-gassing valve and a roast date. 18g/200deg/1.5oz ristrettos are very smooth and pleasant. Works really well in milk drinks, where it offers a little bit of nut to go along with the chocolate. As a reviewer stated before, if you want to see what Harrar has to offer in terms of berry aromas, you would have to stick to a lighter roast.

When it arrived a week after ordering it, they had only shipped half of what I paid for. I eventually got this Harrar 13 days after ordering it, and if it had been as good as other Harrars I have had in the past I might still consider ordering from them. However, it was not, this was rather lackluster and didn't have any of the colorful flavor I attribute to Ethiopian coffee.

jhartman | jhartman | Thu, 07/15/2010Some time ago, Starbucks came out with an Ethiopian Sun-dried Sidamo. It was hands-down the best coffee I'd ever had. It was bold and smooth, and the finish was surprisingly robust of dark cherry. It was out of this world. But it was discontinued in only a few months! So, after I tore my garments and mourned for several months, I got to searching for anything comparable. Shortly after, I found this Ethiopian Harrar, and I thought it might be similar since it is also a dry-processed coffee (i.e. the beans are sun-dried in the fruit for several weeks before processing). Well, I must say that it was very good, however, this was only a Full City roast, so, as you could imagine, the flavors were not quite as bold as the Sidamo, which was surely a dark roast. I may try the Flatback Harrar next and see what that's like.
DIFFERENT BUT GOOD (on Chazzano's Ethiopia ...)
swsimmons | swsimmons | Wed, 07/07/2010I have been getting Vivace Vita which I enjoy so this was definately more earthy. Coffee had different flavors as it aged and all were pleasing. Some fruit 5 day past roast, then chocolate a few days later. Held up in Cappas fine. Actually was quite nice getting different flavors depending on days past roast, kind of an adventure. All were good shots and I was quite happy with this single origin for espresso. I got full city roast not as much fruit as I has expected. I called roaster and he was happy to talk to me about different roast profiles they do this Harrar at. He said ask for City roast next time if you want more blueberry, although I did enjoy the full city roast and will probably just get it this way next time. I ened up going with 197 degrees, 16 gms in double basket, but since it was good I didn't fool with the paramters that much.

thermwk | thermwk | Fri, 06/25/2010If there was an option to give this a 3.5, that's what I would do. Ethiopian Harrar is my favorite coffee when it is good. When it is very good, it is the best. It has been several years since I had great Harrar, however this is pretty good. Definitely a hint of the infamous "blueberry" notes that I love in a great Harrar. I would order it again.

hileona | Mon, 06/21/2010Although Yirgacheffe is my favorite Ethiopian variety, the Harrar was a nice substitute. Beautifully roasted and arrived in the sweet spot, five days after roast date. I will definitely order it again.

The coffee I ordered was shipped directly from the roaster in MI and arrived within three days of its roasting date. Experience has taught me that coffee is best when freshly roasted and ground right before use. As for the Ethiopia Harrar... In a word, "delightful". In the words of the roaster, "With notes of blueberry, cherry, pipe tobacco, with a red wine finish, this coffee will rock your world. How could coffee be as complex as this Ethiopia Harrar. Don't worry about it. There's nothing like it." Sounds like the sort of marketing-speak you would hear at your local wine shop. That being said, the coffee is complex, very pleasant, and worth trying. -Joseph

siriuslion | siriuslion | Mon, 11/28/2011I have used instant, automatic drip, Percolators, tea bag, and stove top coffees up till now. I found and read the reviews for the Chazzano 4-Cup French Press and thought the coffee would be weak or cold....... But I took a leap and bought the Chazzano 4-Cup French Press (more like 2 cup), to my surprise it was the best coffee I've ever had. FYI I like cappuccinos. A little bit of info on what I did, I ran as hot of water as will come out of tap through the pot then,I used 1 heaping Tablespoon of coffee, Boiled the water in microwave oven, then let coffee seep for 4 1/2 minutes, slow depression of plunger about 20 seconds. Coffee burnt my tongue on first cup. I would highly recommend this product to anyone that wants a real good cup of coffee. If you have guests do look into getting much larger version.

krista | krista | Fri, 09/23/2011This is our first French Press, and I'm not sure it gets any better than this. The full, rich flavor of each roast comes through when it's brewed in the Chazzano. The size is perfect, if it were any larger, the coffee would be cold before the two of us could get around to drinking it. It fills our "to go" mugs in the mornings, with no leftovers to be wasted. We savor every cup brewed in this press.

The filter is sturdy and does a good job of removing grounds and coffee solids. Aesthetically, I like this press and it looks well-built, too. My only grip is that mine cracked after accidentally being placed in the dishwasher. I would expect something of this quality to be able to withstand the stress placed on it inside a dishwasher. Otherwise, this served me well for a long time.

swsimmons | swsimmons | Wed, 06/29/2011I like chazaano coffees and figured I would give this a try. Home grinding beans and using the french press is great. I got an electric tea kettle which boils water super fast and then use the french press. 4 cup model is great for1 person. I would go larger if you plan on serving multible people. The model is sturdy and cleanup is easy, the hardest part is waiting 4 minutes for the delcious chanzano coffee to brew.

It certainly does the job well, is easy to clean, and looks attractive on the counter. I assume replacement parts are available, but nothing has gone wrong with this simple, elegant product.

I guess I am just spoiled to my espresso machine. Maybe it was the coffee. It is a lot more work than my espresso machine too. If you get one get a big one this held enough for one large mug. It looked a lot more substantial in the pictures too. I gave it 4 beans instead of 3 because the owner called me with some the answers to an email. Great guy.

I was unsure about buying this coffee at first (untasted). Truly, choosing it was a shot in the dark. But I am glad I did shoot! To my thinking, this coffee is strong and bold without being too much so. It has a vibrant taste that has me waiting for my morning pot of coffee. This pound was roasted full city and I love it.

The reason I rate it at three out of five is because, though it is very good quality coffee, it isn't my favorite flavor. I'd definitely recommend it for coffee drinkers who want something quite different out of their normal coffee experience.

I'm also new to this site. First and foremost I WILL be coming back to this site. I like the convenience, the pricing, the selection, and I received my product quickly. I'd also like to earn that dang $1,000 coffee maker! Once I received my coffee in the mail I could smell it through the packaging and couldn't wait to get home. The smell was heavenly, but I thought the coffee was a little weak. Any tips on brewing this type of coffee would be great. Any recommendations on coffees to try would be great as well.

Most of the coffee I have ordered through ROASTe has been roasted less than a week and some of it only a few days. Tried another pound of PNG and it was better than the first time I tried it. Also it had a more recent roast date than before. This was a full city roast which I believe was a darker roast than last time. Definately will buy again. The whole family and guests all said how much they like this coffee.

The aroma, when I opened the bag, was very nice however did not knock my socks off and I was feeling bit worried! Once the coffee was finished brewing, I was pleasantly surprised! I cannot say enough how good this coffee is! It has a bold and very pleasant taste that I love (hard to explain, but earthy/woodsy might be a start)! Will definitely add this coffee to my list to buy again!

When I poured hot water over the grinds, the mixture bubbled up (bloomed), indicating that this coffee had been roasted only about 2 days prior. You'll NEVER experience that with conventional coffee! It came packaged with some nice colorful confetti paper and a free scoop and pen! Frank is the owner roaster and it shows how much he cares about his coffee. The label on the back of the bag is worth the money alone. And the coffee was terrific. Crisp, clear, distinctive, with a kind of earthy mossy chewiness but not the overpowering earthiness as I've tasted in Sumatran or Sulawasi coffees. Highly recommended!
