Sumatra Danau Toba is a heavy, sweet and syrupy coffee. Green pepper and pipe tobacco dance on the tongue with delectable hints of lime, banana, blackberry, and butterscotch.  Earth flavors resound through this marvelous coffee, creating a bold presence in both the taste and the aroma. Sumatra Danau Toba is a coffee that represents Sumatra well with a heavy body, low acidity, and deep, earthy flavors. It is extremely well processed and sorted to a degree far surpassing all other coffees of the region.

"Sweetly pungent fruit and fresh earth notes throughout the profile. Crisp and grapefruit-like in the aroma, in the cup rich with moist, just decaying fallen leaves and deeper fruit notes; tart cherry perhaps. Leanish but silky mouthfeel. Very sweet, almost sugary in the flavor-saturated finish."

REVIEWS & COMMENTS

  • SWEET, HEAVY, LEMON AND PINEAPPLE.

I wish I remembered the other Sumatra well enough to compare - this seems similar to me but based on a distant memory. I read the description, I get plenty of bright flavors including a lot of lemon and pineapple, but more sweet than sour - maybe it's brighter for me than described because I drink coffee fairly cool (?) A present, pleasant herbal note. Soft heavy mouthfeel.

  • NOT A PERSONAL FAVORITE

This was without doubt a high-quality coffee, but I didn't enjoy its flavor very much if I'm being honest. Would have given 3.5 stars if I could. I found the Sumatra Danau Toba to be really aromatically complex and brighter than I'd expected. Picked up some tart cherry notes, though the tartness wasn't overwhelming. Otherwise, what I tasted was mostly savory. If you liked Counter Culture's recent Baroida (Papua New Guinea), you'll probably like this one.

  • TOO LIGHT

    Neal Thompson | Mon, 08/03/2009 - 19:16

I love my coffee thick, dark, and earthy. Most sumatra beans fit this bill but I was disappointed the moment I opened the package. The beans were a light brown shade and the aroma was anything other than earthy. There was more of a tangy citrus aroma instead. I ground some beans for my fresh press with the hope that the flavor would still translate to the Sumatra taste that I love but again I was disappointed. The coffee was acidic and immature at best. I am slowly finishing the pound, because of how much it cost, but I usually go through a one pound bag in a week. It has already been almost a month. I can't recommend this to someone that is looking for that chewy, smoky, earthy combination.

  • SUMATRA DANAU TOBA IS A DELIGHT AND RARE TREAT

    Nick Usborne | Mon, 07/27/2009 - 01:18

We ground the beans, brewed the grinds immediately and let the coffee cool for a few minutes.

What a wonderful coffee. It is very smooth and sweet, but filled with a rich range of undertones. This isn’t a coffee you brew to get a massive caffeine jolt first thing in the morning. It’s a coffee to savor and enjoy. Stop whatever else you are doing, close your eyes and just savor the aroma and taste.

There is a slight acidity there, not sharp, but enough to wake up your whole mouth. There is a sweetness there too. Maybe a touch of citrus.

After adding a touch of cream, we could imagine enjoying this coffee over and over again.

It’s rare to find a smooth and naturally sweet coffee that still delights with such a broad range of subtle aromas and flavors.
