A beautifully flavorful and complex coffee, Higher Ground's Mexican is grown in the Chiapas region's tropical rainforests. A well-balaned cup with notes of fruit and spice, this delicate coffee offers a light to medium body with a gentle acidity.

Higher Ground prides itself on its coffees that are all organic, Fair Trade, and shade-grown. Allowing the growers to keep their family farms, the Fair Trade certification ensures that these farmers benefit from economic and educational programs, while giving them the chance to grow a high-quality organic bean. The coffee plants grow in the forest canopy's shade—guaranteeing the continued survival of the forests and natural habitat for countless plant and animal species.

100% Organic, Fair Trade, Shade Grown Coffee

FAIRER MEANS
Mexican coffee cooperatives emerged in the mid and late eighties when the Mexican coffee industry was in crisis. Coffee prices were so low that many small-scale farming families could not survive. In response to the Mexican coffee crisis, 16,000 small-scale farmers came together to address the situation collectively. They created an independent cooperative to bypass local middlemen and export their coffee directly. They now sell much of their coffee to the Fair Trade market and are guaranteed a price that will support the co-op’s member families. Higher Ground works with the families of the Ismam Cooperative, and through Fair Trade sales, they have been able to accomplish the following:

• Increase opportunities for education—all children of coop members attend primary school, and many have the opportunity to attend secondary school and beyond.
• Increase average incomes—thereby reducing migration, keeping families together, and preserving local indigenous culture.
• Purchase new equipment and build infrastructure for processing and transportation to the growing coffee market

Higher Ground wins ROAST Magazine 2008 Micro-Roaster of the Year award!

  • WHEN I DON'T WANT A FLAVORED

    nmarchand85 | Wed, 01/25/2012 - 12:36

When I don't want a flavored coffee I always go for Higher Ground's Mexican Coffee. It's a great medium body coffee that is flavorful and smooth. I enjoy coffees that have a slight citrus flavor to them and that's exactly what this coffee offers.

  • WE REALLY ENJOYED THIS

    samlaffey | Wed, 08/31/2011 - 15:13

We really enjoyed this coffee and can't wait to try more from this roaster. We've had a lot of dark roasts lately so this was a welcome refreshment with a different feel. It was light and strong at the same time and superbly drinkable. Had a really earthy flavor coming out of French Press--absolutely loved it!

  • NOT IMPRESSED

    Jennsplinter | Mon, 06/20/2011 - 22:57

I recently ordered this Mexican Roast and must say not my favorite. The coffee did not seem to have any depth and left me overall unimpressed. I usually appreciate the light bodied Mexican roasts on a warm summer morning. But this was not light and refreshing at all. Tried in my Technivorm and Chemex. The Chemex allowed for a bit more taste of chocolate notes. Shame as I love the ethos of Higher Ground, but I do believe can be combined for good tasting coffee.

i loved this coffee, smooth no bitterness. I like a bold coffee but not so much that it is almost bitter or strong. This fits the bill for my personal tastes

  • MEXICAN CHIAPAS

    billlyons | Fri, 08/13/2010 - 23:09

Good tasting coffee but a little lightly roasted for my taste. Slight odd flavor but was better when blended 50-50 with Higher Blend's Sumatra medium roast.
