Yama Tabletop Siphon 3 Espresso Cup (15 ounce capacity) is a smaller version of our 5-cup Tabletop. It includes a warmer for liquid burning alcohol so that you can brew your after dinner coffee drinks right on your table! This feature also makes the Tabletop Siphon a great amenity for restaurants.
To make coffee with the Yama Tabletop Coffee Siphon, start with a slightly finer grind of coffee. Drop the washable, reusable cloth covered filter into the infusion chamber so that the chain hangs down into the glass siphon tube. Pull the chain down and hook it to the bottom of the siphon tube. Fill the bottom carafe to the mark for the desired number of cups with hot water and place one measuring spoon of coffee per cup in top chamber.
Fill the burner with "soot free" denatured alcohol, ethyl or an ethyl / isopropyl mixture that's high on the ethanol side. (See note below on alcohol.)
It takes about 4 minutes to heat the water which is siphoned to the top chamber. Allow 2 minutes for the brewing. Remove the coffee from the heat source; it will return to the bottom carafe. Remove the top, placing it in its convertible lid/stand.
A word about the alcohol: isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) tends to burn hotter than ethyl or methyl alcohols, but also burns orange and produces a lot of soot. This is available at hardware or outdoor stores.
If one of the siphon's chambers breaks during shipping, please let us know and we'll replace the chamber at our expense.

WONDERFUL

YAMA 3 CUP VAC POT
dpablo19 | Mon, 09/05/2011 - 15:46I really enjoy the process of brewing coffee with this method. It creates perhaps the smoothest cup of coffee around. I sometimes take issue with the filters removing too many of the coffee solids, which dilutes the flavor in the cup. The clothe filters definitely create better coffee but they are a pain to clean and wear out quickly. I switched to a metal filter because of its ease-of-use. Another issue with vac pots is timing the brew process and achieving the optimal four minute mark. One begins timing when hot water touches the coffee, but it is impossible to figure out when water will begin to leave the brew chamber and at what rate. A chemex-style pourover is easier, but not nearly as fun. Also, the burner this thing comes with is useless. If I had stuck with the oil burner, it would take at least 60 minutes to get water to 180 degrees. I place the siphon over a gas stove and it works far better. A propane burner for camping would work just as well.
GREAT BREWING DEVICE, GREAT PRESENTATION
Steve Rhinehart | Tue, 06/28/2011 - 08:01There's nothing quite like the spectacle of a table-top vac pot. Any guest you have over not familiar with the device will gaze in wonder, and the resulting cup is fairly certain to please. While the process, and clean-up, can be a little tedious, it is not a difficult device to get the hang of. This 3-cup model can produce roughly 12 oz. (max) of coffee, but I've always had better luck right around 10 oz., which is perfect for that big morning cuppa, or two smaller cups to share after dinner. Cloth is one of my favorite filter mediums, though this vac pot will also work with DIY paper filters, as well as some older glass filters. It is important to know, though, that cloth filters require maintenance; they must be cleaned frequently, and stored well, or they will pick up off flavors.
Two major drawbacks to this particular vac pot: First, the glass is delicate, and reportedly of inconsistent quality. Mine has lasted me nearly a year at this point with no breakage, even with the cold cloth drawdown method, but others have been the victims of thermal shock or unfortunate chips and breaks. While I've never owned a Hario pot, they are said to be better quality, perhaps justifying the higher cost. Second, the alcohol lamp the Yama comes with is essentially garbage. It's worth the money to purchase a butane burner, which will give more control and speed up the process. Even with pre-boiled water, my alcohol lamp brews were at least twice as long as my butane brews. For $40, a found a Rekrow burner, and I wouldn't recommend a table-top vac pot used with anything less.
Overall, despite some drawbacks and some inconsistent quality control, I would recommend a Yama vac pot to anyone I know. It's a great way to produce a delicious cup somewhere between drip and press, and a very unique presentation when entertaining.
PRETTY GOOD AND IS NOT AS
sense820 | Mon, 03/21/2011 - 01:18Pretty good and is not as fragile as I expected it to be. Only problem is that the filter itself is not heavy enough and may float up allowing some residues to filter down.
EXCELLENT COFFEE MAKER! IT
ratkin | Thu, 03/04/2010 - 01:05Excellent coffee maker! It does take a bit longer than advertised (closer to 10 minutes rather than 3 to 5). Great for brewing a cup of coffee at the desk or table. Holds just enough for one large cup. No bitter taste at all, but still makes very strong coffee. Overall very pleased with this product!
I BOUGHT THIS AS A GIFT, AND
stephaniesnipes | Mon, 02/15/2010 - 01:13I bought this as a gift, and I think it's safe to say it was a hit. My friend is a chem engineering major and loves coffee, so this seemed like the perfect present. He said he used Isopropyl Alcohol (rubbing alcohol; I don't think he had 100% -- probably used 70%) as lighter fluid and that the resulting cup of coffee was indeed "strong but without the bitter aftertaste [of a french press or drip coffee]." This syphon coffee maker is a great gift idea for any coffee lover who is up for trying a new and quite flashy way of brewing! :)
