This intensely fulfilling, heavier bodied, earthy coffee is sweet and creamy with subtle notes of chocolate. The light / medium roasting method adds a spicy, bittersweet quality to this grand cup.

  • TIMOR , TWO THUMBS DOWN

The following is the description from the company:
"This intensely fulfilling, heavier bodied, earthy coffee is sweet and creamy with subtle notes of chocolate. The darker roasting method adds a spicy, bittersweet quality to this grand cup."

I wonder if they rushed out my coffee. It was not a darker roast- perhaps City Roast. No heavy body. I didn't find any spicy or bittersweet attribute.. Earthy sounds like a phony term and I didn't find any sweetness or creaminess. I did taste the subtle chocolate.

I used a conical burr grinder, filtered water- near boiling in a French Press, so the brewing method was OK.
Intensely fullfilling sounds like a made up term however this coffee didn't fullfill any of my needs.

  • I LIKED IT!

This makes for a good cup of coffee. I think it tastes best made with a French press. Noticeable chocolate tones upon smell a taste which does not disappoint.

A light, clean- and clear-tasting brew. Also makes for a fine cup of ice coffee.

  • KICK IN THE PANTS

My wife and I both enjoy dark roast coffee, she with cream, me either black or with cream & sugar, depends on the day. I'll say that sugar is wasted on this coffee! The roast is so deep and rich that it would take bags of sugar to cut through the bitterness.
That is a good thing, just to be clear. The bitter taste is not "burnt" (ala St*r$$) in any way, it just sort of lingers on the back of your tongue long after your cup has run dry. A nice lingering memory of the time you spent drinking it and lazing in the morning sun.
My wife thought this coffee was the antithesis of the "cowboy coffee" you get in the Midwest -- over-watery, but you can drink cup after cup all day long. A little experiment (my dad's favorite brew) proved this true: we ran a second batch of water through the grounds, and had nearly as good a cup as the first go round. A little bit can definitely go a long way.

Rich, full-bodied, and not for the timid.

  • A GREAT SHADE GROWN BREW

    arclight | Fri, 08/14/2009 - 14:03

A friend gave me some of Flat Black's Timor Maubesse because he thought I would enjoy it (I like deep, dark, and rich coffee) and I finally got around to a session with my French press and the Timor.

At first open, the beans are dark and perfectly roasted. Grab a handful pre-grind and smell them - They make you hungry, they bring out Earth and a cool crisp smell. These beans are a great shade grown balance of robust flavor that retains a smooth complexity. Any plant (tobacco or coffee, etc) grown in the shade is a classic, a throw back to the turn of the century when care and artistic mastery of farming was king. These beans embody that feeling like no other available on the small market.

These beans made for a great large grind for my French press, with the perfect amount of head on the steep and a creamy caramel foam. Keep in mind I take my coffee black, so I can't speak to how it works with milk and sugar.

The brew was a beautiful mahogany color and exactly what you would expect from a high level, deep roast. It was aromatic and tasted simply amazing. This is a forgiving dark roast.

I had this brew hot and then had some cold on ice. It is certainly a brew made for heat, but I have a big soft spot for the rocks and it stood up well.

Overall, this is a great pick for anyone who likes a cup of coffee that talks to you and can be enjoyed slowly with the morning paper. If you appreciate shade grown beans you will love this.

    Mike
