EXPENSIVE BUT DECENT DEDICATED GRINDER WITH A HIGH NOISE
samuellaw178 | Fri, 11/11/2011 - 10:09First, this grinder has Tre spade burrs which are proven to be very capable for espresso grinding. So, if you are looking for an espresso grinder, this might be the one. However, the one and only quirk you need to know up front is the noise. Because of the burr set and there is no effort in the design to dampen to sound, La Pavoni PGC is a very loud grinder when it's in operation. It's loud enough to not allow conversation 2-3 feet away. It has a worm-gear for adjustability, which can be good or bad. It allows microadjustability for espresso but you cant switch between Press and Espresso range with ease because it would take million of turns to swtich. Almost impossible. This grinder has a small static problem but not big enough to deter me from using it. It has a doserless chute which is pretty good in my opinion despite hold a small amount of coffee. As a whole, it has a shiny chrome finish on plastic and very counterspace friendly.
In a conclusion, this is a good espresso grinder if you can stand the noise. But for the retail price, I would not get it at all. Baratza Preciso has much better features to offer than this. Unless it's about $100, then it's worth a try.
TRE SPADE BURRS + INFINITE ADJUSTMENT = GREAT ESPRESSO
EricBNC | Wed, 04/27/2011 - 16:29My version has the chrome finish which looks very nice. The body is plastic and not metal but seems sturdy enough and should hold up under normal use. The worm gear adjustment lets you dial in the grind for a perfect shot. The heart of this machine is the burr set and burr carrier system - though poly and not metal, the threaded design eliminates most particle size variance - a must for excellent espresso.
