A MOD AWAY
intrepid510 | Sun, 01/29/2012 - 23:28These grinders for a while were one of the most used home espresso grinders, because there was not a lot out there besides the big bad commercial grinders. And at that time compared to other grinders out there the Rocky did a great job of grinding for espresso. However, as other grinders have come out that focus on the home market it has made the Rocky less appealing.
Pros: Grinds fine enough for espresso, built like a tank, doser to break up clumps.
Cons: Large stepped grinding (if you want a dose of 15 grams but it flows too fast and you tighten your grind it will be too fine)
RANCILIO BRAND
samuellaw178 | Sun, 12/25/2011 - 13:06In my opinion, you're probably paying a little more for the Rancilio's name. I would probably get other grinders with the same cost. However, Rocky is a decent entry level grinder for espresso. It should last you many years of services.
RANCILIO ROCKY GRINDER WITH DOSER
lunaluz1 | Sun, 11/20/2011 - 12:32Along with the Rancilio Silva, I bought this grinder to ensure I would get the kind of results I was looking for. As all reviews suggest, you need this quality of grinder in order to maximize the benefits of using a machine like the Silvia. I like the doser aspect of this grinder although some do not. It does take some time to learn the correct calibration for each type of coffee. However, part of the fun of using this equipment is learning through practice. Once again, Tim at Roaste. was very helpful in answering my questions. My interactions with Roaste. have been excellent, and I look forward to trying some of their coffees soon. I am hoping that they will get Stumptown to join their roster of coffee vendors.
NICE GRINDER
EricBNC | Wed, 11/02/2011 - 19:57One of the nicer espresso grinders available - it can go from espresso to drip and back quickly - it is versatile and well built for the price.
GOOD GRINDER
Wakeknot | Tue, 09/27/2011 - 20:33great price on a good intro level grinder. I like this dosered version of the Rocky better than the doserless.
GREAT LITTLE GRINDER - NOT SURE ABOUT DOSER
djsenatore | Wed, 06/29/2011 - 07:28I have two Rockys, one w/doser for espresso, one without for my drip coffee. I grind for one double shot of espresso at a time. It grinds very well but I find that gauging the amount of espresso to grind took some time to get down since I fill the hopper @ 1/3 full. I should really just scoop the correct amount of beans for each shot instead... For my application the doser unit is useless and amounts to little more than a holding tank for the ground espresso. I have to pull the lever @ 10 times to make sure I've cleared the grinds. If you're going to be pulling several shots at a time then it's probably better to have the doser and grind a bunch of beans and dose away. It's not particularly efficient at clearing the grinds out so you'll always have some residuals in there which is true of pretty much any doser unit. The fact that it's not stepless is an issue because that in between setting you can't get will be a factor some time in the course of your espresso drinking. Bottom line - they're plentiful so you can usually find a used one at a good price. It grinds very well, the size and style is perfect for home use. Whether to get the doser or doserless depends on how much you'll be grinding at a time. I really wish it had a removable tray on the bottom to collect the loose grounds that fall. Maybe the new ones do but I don't see that on the specs.
WORKHORSE
matt.holstege | Tue, 04/26/2011 - 14:11This grinder is a workhorse. It is a good reliable grinder (heavy too). My only regret is I wish I had purchased the doserless grinder. The doser is a little messy.
RANCILIO ROCKY
cyclesomatic75 | Mon, 08/16/2010 - 09:27I love the doser feature, I just wish you could move the bottom holder up and down, to avoid dropping coffee every time you pull out the filter baskets. I have gotten used to measuring the amount I need for each basket, even like that I drop plenty of coffee. Also and added feature that would be nice, is that it be great if the top cover was clear to see how much you are grinding, to avoid using to much. The best coffee is more expensive. Other than that its great.
