Reviews & Comments
Overall, this was a worthwile cup of coffee. As usual, I looked at different parts of the experience separately. So, first I was impressed by the package; simple design, interesting material (kraft paper for texture, film lining for freshness), stand-up gusset on the bottom, and a re-seal design that actually worked (some don't). (Full Disclosure: I was in the packaging business in my past life). The roasting date was on the label as well. Then there is the aroma of the whole beans: really nice. After grinding, there was an intense bouquet. Finally, after brewing, there was a bit of a letdown. It was a pretty good cuppa, but nothing really outstanding. Low acid, nice finish with no bitterness, but I was left looking for that intense flavor hit that I expected after the great post-grind bouquet. Maybe I'll play with the brewing for my next bag. Perhaps I made a mistake along the way?
Opening the bag gave a strong smell of oatmeal(?), which was interesting and unexpected. The beans were more dry than oily. The coffee itself was a little lighter than a usual Italian roast. It was full of subtleties and complexities of a tasty coffee, but without the intensity that I was expecting.
I was pleased I ordered this coffee to try something different, but I was't sure that I would order it again... until I chilled a pot and had it as iced coffee. It added intensity to the wonderful qualities already in this coffee. I was suprised at how much I liked it.
DISCLAIMER: I am not a "cupping" expert. I just drink a lot of coffee.
