Bonsai Blend by Velton’s Coffee Roasting Company has quickly become a favorite of coffee connoisseurs everywhere. Whether it’s drunk as a straight shot, blended with milk, or brewed as regular coffee, the Bonsai is going to leave you delighted. Roasted to a “medium” degree (right up to second crack), it produces a thick, smooth shot with a lingering sweetness. Bonsai Blend exhibits notes of milk chocolate, caramel, hazelnut, and citrus fruit.
Bonsai Blend is Velton's "Espresso" blend, but coffee lovers seem to enjoy it just as much an automatic drip.
VELTON'S SHIPS ONCE A WEEK ON TUESDAYS. Orders received by Monday noon ship on Tuesday. It's worth the wait.
Bonsai Blend (espresso) is roast-to-order.
Velton's Coffee was recognized by Imbibe Magazine as one of “10 Tiny Coffee Roasters Making a Big Splash”.
Bonsai Blend (espresso) received the all-time best score (94) ever given by CoffeeReview.com for an espresso blend!
"Everyone should drink it: round, rich mouthfeel, natural sweetness, great complexity, suave presence in milk."
REVIEWS & COMMENTS
BONSAI BLEND
Karrde | Fri, 03/02/2012 - 02:55To me this is a pretty good coffee and very good espresso. It definitely improved in flavor at about day 5-6 onwards. See a more detailed review here: http://www.roaste.com/CoffeeBlogs/Karrde/What-Im-Drinking-Velton-Coffee-...
BEST OF THE THREE VELTON'S BLENDS.
pokeypine | Fri, 02/17/2012 - 11:49The best of the three available Velton's blends. I only had the chance to try it as an french press, aeropress and immerse & filter (clever dripper style) and the Bonsai blend works reasonably well with all three methods. There were overtones of the described milk chocolate, caramel, hazelnut, and citrus fruit however you do not get the strong hazelnut element that is often described in many of the reviews that evaluated as an espresso.
EASILY THE BEST!
samuellaw178 | Tue, 01/31/2012 - 12:08I have tried many of the coffee beans on ROASTe and this is easily the best one I've tried and my favourite so far! First of all, the dry aroma is so intoxicating and you just can't stop smelling it. It's sooo good! When pulled in cup, it doesn't disappoint at all, almost as good as it smells. Overall, it's very balanced and nuanced. Good amount of body that coats your palate for a long time. Leaves a good aftertaste too. There's nothing more you could ask of it! Perfect blend and roast!
VERY TASTY AND MAY BUY
rlsimon1 | Tue, 12/20/2011 - 18:13Very tasty and may buy again, though did not my socks off. Worth a try though.
LET IT REST!
intrepid510 | Mon, 12/05/2011 - 15:30I got this coffee just a scant three days post roast, which is great! However, until day 6 post roast I found the coffee to be dull and flavorless. However, without changing any of my methods on the morning of day 6 it was like a complete different coffee. The americanos that I made from it all had strong rich hazelnut to them and were just delicious and very balanced. Very impressed once I got past those first few days!
BONSAI BLEND
vulches | Wed, 11/16/2011 - 14:09Very subtle blend that did not power through milk too well, but was very pleasant tasting nonetheless. Good value in the midst of the rapidly increasing prices of beans.
GREAT COFFEE
Wakeknot | Thu, 10/27/2011 - 21:00I've really enjoyed this. It is versatile and makes nice shots of espresso and good brewed, too. My favorite way to drink it is with a lever machine.
CREAMY

VELTON'S BONSAI BLEND
paul.nibber | Tue, 10/25/2011 - 12:18This is one of the most amazing espresso blends I have ever tried. It took approximately 7 days post-roast for me to get everything I could out of it, but the wait was worth it. It was very sweet with a berry-like high note. There is a bit of a sweet spot temperature-wise which could be anywhere from 202-204 degrees. Within that spectrum, you'll find shots go from fruit to caramel.
NOTHING SPECIAL
casco | Wed, 10/12/2011 - 06:56After trying 6 new types of coffee with my first Roaste order and choosing several that are "highly rated" by Coffee Review, I've come to realize that good tasting coffee is highly subjective and I don't always like these "highly rated" coffees. My biggest complaint with the Bonsai Blend is that there is an overwhelmingly hazelnut taste that lingers on the tongue for a long time. If this were a blind taste test, I would think that I were drinking a pure hazelnut coffee.

BONSAI BLEND
ewelch | Wed, 09/14/2011 - 12:35Smooth, rich, & creamy, very well blended. Will definitely purchase a larger bag next time. The 12 oz. went way too fast.

GREAT ESPRESSO (WITH A CAVEAT)
jbviau | Thu, 09/01/2011 - 22:37I do enjoy this quite a bit as espresso. Haven't tried it with milk, but straight the shots are delicious--full of chocolate and nutty notes with caramel in the background. The caveat comes with respect to claims here and elsewhere that this coffee is satisfying/delightful when brewed "regularly," too. It certainly doesn't shine in a press, in my opinion. Expecting it to do so is unreasonable, I realize, but then again the expectation wasn't entirely my fault. 1 star docked for no other reason than to draw attention to this small discrepancy between truth and advertising. Stick to espresso with the Bonsai Blend and you should be very happy.
PERFECTION
EricBNC | Thu, 09/08/2011 - 22:11Simply outstanding - the dry aroma is sweet and inviting making filling the hopper with these beans a joy. The first shot was too tight with a 35 second pull - forgot how fresh these beans with an 8/15/11 roast date were and more important, I forgot what the texture of ground beans roasted and blended for espresso is like compared to light roast single origin beans.
That shot was decent but nothing compared to the second pull - the filter basket required very little tamping, more of a polish really than a press, and away I went with my Gaggia sending a cone of caramel and chocolate color into my glass - the crema is speckled with the same colors and sits nicely with moderate thickness waiting for my first sip.
While still hot, I get a clean yet powerful sweet chocolate note with some nuttiness to the finish while after letting it cool a bit this sweetness is joined by a delightful long lasting fruit finish - nice taste, nice tingle too - an excellent espresso.
VERSATILE
Doug Pickett | Sat, 08/20/2011 - 03:39This is a pretty solid coffee. It is very versatile, as it makes a great espresso and a above average french press. The price also can not really be beat. Would definitely order again.
FAVORITE ESPRESSO BLEND
CURRENTONE | Tue, 07/26/2011 - 21:21one of my favorites, smooth and forgiving
BEST I EVER HAD
cardpages | Mon, 07/18/2011 - 08:30I tried Bonsai Blend when I was visiting some friends in Seattle, and I was really blown away. We drank it as espresso shots, which I don't tend to drink, but I was completely amazed by the lack of bitterness. I drank about 20 cups while I was there, I couldn't get enough. When I returned home to NJ, I was ecstatic to see ROASTe selling it. I've been drinking it as a regular drip coffee at home and it's just as amazing. My life is better with Bonsai Blend in it! Not surprised coffeereview.com gave it a 94.
RICH, INTERESTING AND DELICIOUS
pgreene | Thu, 06/30/2011 - 08:41I got into this coffee 9 days after roast and the texture and flavors were great. Easy to brew - I emailed Velton's to ask for brew suggestions and they were very generous in their reply. My temp measurements are based on the offset so may not be accurate, but I tried the suggested 18g at 201, a few shots later I came down to 200.5 to get more fruit and it seemed to work.
At the higher temp there was a rich central flavor, didn't taste "roasty" to me, just dark and sweet, along with a clear high fruit note that was bright without being sharp, the darker and brighter flavors were upfront together - often there's a dark flavor after with fruity coffee, that they were all upfront got my attention. My first shot was a bit too fast, less than 20 seconds for about 1.5 oz, it is the shot on which my description is based. I tend to like a fast flowing shot cut short so maybe it's just me. Vetlon's suggests 1.5 oz in 25 - 30 seconds.
