  • GREAT COMPACT GRINDER

This grinder is small and easy to use. Produces a decent grind for drip but wouldn't really recommend for espresso use.

  • DOES THE JOB

I wanted to take my espresso up a step from preground cans to whole beans, ground right before brewing. To do that I needed my own grinder, but the price for a decent electric was holding me back. Then I found people talking about this machine and how it can grind fine enough to choke an espresso machine and it's so cheap! Now, I use a Presso so my needs might differ from someone using a "real" espresso machine. For instance, I'm finding that a shot time somewhere between 35 and 40 seconds is giving me better results than the standard 25 seconds; I'm guessing this is due to the lower pressure I'm probably getting. Anyway, I find depending on the bean I use this grinder set anywhere from 5 to 7 "clicks". So I get some play in being able to fine tune my grind. And that is exciting to me, definately taking things up to that next level.

Next step: roasting my own beans! :)

  • BEST PORTABLE GRINDER

    samuellaw178 | Sat, 12/24/2011 - 18:55

This is the best portable grinder because it's cheap and produce a decent grind as a travel grinder. It's even smaller than the Hario Skerton which made it the best travelling grinder in my opinion.

  • GREAT PRICE

for the money this is the best bang for the buck when grinding for espresso - for less than the price of a set of burrs for a Mazzer you will enjoy 75% of the quality that $700 grinder can produce.

  • STILL EARLY, BUT...

    jbviau | Sat, 12/10/2011 - 00:33

...I like it well enough. A touch louder than I'd expected. Prefer it over the Skerton, which I had and sold. Bought this with the intention of modding it the way yeahyeah described; will report back once that's done.

  • HARIO MINI MILL SLIM COFFEE GRINDER

    Susan T | Sun, 11/13/2011 - 08:22

After some research, my husband purchased this coffee grinder for me. He decided that this would not have the noise factor of the electric grinders and since I am only doing a small amount at a time, it would be sufficient. I like the fact that this grinder doesn't take up much counter space. I can adjust the size of the grounds pretty easily. At first, I found it a bit awkward, but now I am used to it. An electric grinder would probably be easier and faster, but I don't mind having a quick "morning work out" with this one.

  • HARIO MINI MILL

    yeahyeah | Fri, 10/21/2011 - 22:06

This grinder is more than adequate for espresso right out of the box, but just so-so for drip or press. There is noticeable play in the shaft and burrs out of the box. The grind is consistent at finer settings but gets more and more poorly sorted as the grind coarsens. It takes about two minutes of grinding for me to get through 17 grams for espresso.

With light modification I'd bump the score up to 5/5. I shimmed the space between the shaft-housing and the shaft using plastic from a milk carton and shimmed the burr mounts with some tape as well. With this modification the shaft is rock solid and grind consistency is much better at all settings. With the modification I'd put this grinder right up there with much more expensive grinders.

For anyone also considering the Hario Skerton: I'd recommend the Mini Mill over the Hario Skerton unless you need the extra capacity. I played around with the Skerton and I didn't like the grind size adjustment process and its size makes holding the grinder awkward. It seemed to have more burr-play than the stock mini mill as well.

  • NOT GOOD FOR POUR-OVER; THE

    broseph | Thu, 09/29/2011 - 22:17

Not good for pour-over; the fines clog the draw-down.

    OK for Aeropress.
