  • TO WHITEBANJA RE: ESPRESSO GRIND

    Mahogany Roasters | Wed, 09/28/2011 - 16:51

Have Faith Dearhearts, All is not lost. Truly fine espresso is a dance between grind, roast, machine, even barometric pressure. Back off on the amount of coffee in the portafilter, even to where you are sure you are using too little. This will probably result in a juicy shot. Then make a shot with a bit more until you are getting a syrupy shot that takes about 30 seconds to pour, sheer magic. If it is still choking, back off on the tamp even to going with a no-tamp shot and then tamping a little more till you find the sweet spot. Good espresso is not easy, it is the perfect grind to expose the right amount of surface area, the espresso machine to deliver 132 psi to the portafilter and the finesse of the barista to hake it happen. FYI, as you know, the French Press likes an even chunkier coffee than drip. In the long run, consider picking up an espresso grinder to complement your espresso machine.

  • POORLY GROUND

    whitebenja | Wed, 09/28/2011 - 09:34

I ordered an espresso grind. It was way to powdery to use in an espresso machine - kept clogging the machine up! Ended up having to use it in a french press which was more like mud.

I was hoping this was going to be the beginning of a beautiful relaitonship. Not.

  • THE LABEL SHOWED THE BEANS

    dscavo | Sat, 09/03/2011 - 20:51

The label showed the beans as recently roasted, but the beans seemed very dry (not rich in aroma or oily at all).

I used the entire bag, but in my opinion Starbuck's Sumatra had much better flavorand at 1/2 the cost.

As this was my first order from Roaste, delivery was great but the coffee left me unimpressed.

  • LISTED AS A MEDIUM ROAST,

    wihalpin | Sat, 06/18/2011 - 07:49

Listed as a medium roast, this was a little darker than I expected, causing the beans to be a little oily, but all in all, good flavor.

  • SUMATRA MAHOGANY

    chrisschafer33 | Wed, 05/11/2011 - 21:47

I was excited when I purchased three pounds of Sumatra Mahogany Coffee for around $11 per lb. I was somewhat disappointed that it was not as bold as other Sumatra's I have purchased. I found myself using almost 1/3 more coffee than normal to get it to my taste. I think most people though would find this coffee to be good and at a very good value.

  • MAHOGANY ROASTERS SUMATRA COFFEE

    mlhunsley | Sat, 12/04/2010 - 22:14

Well let me tell ya... I couldn't wait to get this coffee in the mail and when I did I wasn't disappointed. My friends tell me I have become a "coffee snob" but I tell them they just don't know what good coffee is. This coffee has a great flavor with no bitter aftertaste. It may not be quite as dark as soom I have tried in the past but it definitely one of the best. Very smooth. Would recommend this to all who like GREAT cup of coffee.

  • I WASN'T AS IMPRESSED WITH

    silenceofthemimes | Tue, 09/28/2010 - 06:58

I wasn't as impressed with this one as I have been with my last two. To much acidity for my liking, but still very fresh with the roast date printed on the bag.

  • SUMATRA MAHOGANY ROCKS!

    coffeepam | Wed, 07/28/2010 - 12:37

I won a pound of the Sumatra Mahogany and boy, did I win big! My whole office kept commenting on how good it smelled as I brewed the first pot (even the non-coffee drinkers!). It is very strong but I have found that the best coffee doesn't require as much per pot due to the pureness and strength of the beans roasted. They may cost a litle more but they last longer and the awesome flavor and smoothness is totally worth it. I would definitely purchase this again and seeing how popular it is in my office, I have a feeling that may come sooner than later! Thanks Roaste! Great prize, great coffee!!

  • SAVORING SUMATRA

    banec1 | Thu, 07/22/2010 - 18:36

My postman knocked on my door, holding the shipment in his hand. "I have your coffee," he said. I think he might have been angling to be invited in and offered a cup. I could smell the fresh-roasted aroma through both the packaging and the foil container. I put it on the shelf in my pantry. An hour later, I just couldn't resist the siren call of the aroma any longer. I ground beans and brewed a pot.

I have had a lot of Sumatra coffees. It's one of my favorite varieties. I can honestly say, this Sumatra Mahogany tops them all. There isn't a hint of acidy bitterness in the cup. It stands up well to cream (me) or cream and sugar (my husband and son), still delivering a potent coffee flavor through the embellishments. It makes a fine cup of iced coffee, as well. I will be recommending this to all my coffee-drinking friends!

  • AS I BEGIN THIS, ALLOW ME TO

    qwfbv | Thu, 07/15/2010 - 18:03

As I begin this, allow me to preface by saying that my preferred method of brewing is french press, I use a small bit of sugar per cup, and I enjoy long bike rides.
Sumatra Mandheling is perhaps my favorite bean. The folks at Mahogany roasters have found a unique way of roasting that is simply amazing. The first thing I noticed, as I opened the freshly roasted bag, was an odd almost citrus-y hint. My curiosity about the taste quickly became an impatience, as the three minute brew time could not pass quickly enough.
There are times (magically few) when a coffee tastes just right. It seems to take on similar qualities of "rightness" that frozen grapes take on a hot day, crunchy leaves under your feet in fall, and a warm fireplace in the middle of a snowstorm. My first cup was just right.
So I'm not sure what the secret process was that Mahogany used, but I hope they keep it a secret longer. It's going to keep me making referrals to them to others!
