Aleta Wondo is an organic Ethiopian with heavenly aromas and flavors of sweet strawberry and stone fruits, with wonderful cocoa and nutty undertones. Aleta Wondo coffee, grown in the heart of the Sidamo region, offers refreshing acidity and lingering sweetness, as well as exotic fruit tones in the aftertaste.

This single origin, organically grown, direct trade coffee so distinctive in character that it is unblended. Tasting notes speak of chocolate, blackberry and bergamot and judges wax merely poetic about its nutty, cognac-like finish. Coffee is generally grown under a canopy of shade trees - cultivated up to elevations of 6,000 feet and sorted through selective local coffee workers.

Tsegaye Bekele, northern California resident since 1976, was born and raised in Aleta Wondo, Ethiopia. Coffee runs in his blood; he grew up on a coffee plantation, where coffee is a ritual, a ceremony, a way of life. His first memories go back to the aroma of freshly roasted and ground Aleta Wondo coffee. After 40 years he returned to his village and felt deeply touched by the conditions of the coffee farmers. His commitment to give back to Aleta Wondo resulted in the formation of Common River, a non-profit community development organization.

Aleta Wondo coffee has already proven its exemplary quality at a recently held international coffee competition; five lots from the village rated among the ten best coffees. Aleta Wondo Project goal is to increase the livelihood of coffee farmers by sustaining their own development. Since 2007, a schoolhouse was constructed, 1200 trees were planted, a community center was built and a nutrition demonstration garden was planted.

Preparations have been made with ECAFE Foundation to train millers and farmers at a Coffee Learning Center and Tasting Lab in the Bekele Hotel. Profits from the coffee sales will directly fund education, health, water, sanitation and livelihood development to this community.

Today, coffee is being perfected and benefiting more than 120 kids through education, healthcare and other important services which are provided through the project. It is our privilege at Klatch to offer such a unique coffee, which supports healthcare, education, water projects, and more, to people of Aleta Wondo.

REVIEWS & COMMENTS

  • VERY NICE BEANS

    halowords | Tue, 08/09/2011 - 11:24

The Aleta Wondo beans were very good and part of my overall Klatch order. Service was good. My problems with the beans were pretty much my learning curve with espresso. I am still learning, hence MY espresso was not great. The beans still worked well despite my less-than-perfect technique. In French Press and drip, the beans were pretty nice as well, and I'd like to try them again.

  • ALETA WONDO COFFEE SMOOTH MELLOW FLAVORFUL

    megan.ralston | Sun, 06/26/2011 - 14:08

We love this coffee. A few years ago, we started drinking only Ethiopian coffee. We have tried many kinds in many different roasts including those that we purchased directly at the roaster rather than online. So far nothing we've had has been better than the Ethiopian Aleta Wondo Organic Sidamo Coffee. We usually buy it at Roaste.com where it comes quickly and in a medium roast. We like it so much that we have it on an automatic purchase. Once in while, we like to have the dark roast which we get at aletawondo.com (which is where Roaste gets the green beans for their medium roast of this coffee). The folks at Aleta Wondo Coffee speak very highly of the roasters at Roaste, and we have been very pleased.

  • FRUITY, TOO FRUITY?

    charliepress | Sat, 04/02/2011 - 11:18

I like the coffee, but tried it mainly to see how it compares to the Klatch Gedeo Worka. It's a washed process instead of dry (which I prefer), and perhaps a bit too much acid and fruit for my taste. I like cocoa overtones in coffee, but if you don't, this is a fine cup.

This coffee is very very fruity as an espresso. Almost a little too tart, but still good.
