El Salvador La Montana coffee attracts the senses with its deep floral and sweet citrus aroma. The taste further pleases with complex yet delicate flavor notes, including cherry, citrus, flowers, grape jelly, candied orange and peach. The cup ends with a long finish.
El Salvador La Montana  *MONDAY ROAST ONLY*

Ken Davids of Coffee Review gave La Montana a 92 point rating for its "Deep floral and sweet citrus aroma with hints of toast. Well-integrated acidity, with medium body and a silky mouth-feel. Complex yet delicate flavor notes include cherry, citrus, flowers and muted nut, with a long syrupy sweet finish."
The beans are vacuum-packed in 10 kilo foil bags to preserve their quality throughout the year.

This large bean Pacamara varietal, another of Klatch Direct Trade coffees, comes from our friend Raul 'Beto' Ochoa of Finca La Montana. Last year this coffee took first place in the El Salvador Cup of Excellence. We visited Beto in January after the cyclone hit his farm and much of Central America. Sadly, much of his crop was destroyed, but we were able to secure this coffee and are helping Beto to rebuild his farm.

Finca La Montana is nested within the coffee region known as the Alotepec-Metapan mountain range. Bourbon, Pacas and Pacamara varieties are presently being cultivated, grown under a shade tree canopy. The fertile clay loam soils respond well to the ecologically-friendly practices used, including organic fertilization. The farm altitude is 1,385 meters above sea level.

Inheriting an uncultured land from his father many years ago, in 1986 Beto began growing coffee with seeds bought in by the extinct ISIC, an institute which was responsible to create the Pacamara hybrid from the cross between Red Maragogipe and the local Pacas variety. At first he grew only Bourbon and Pacas, and not until 1999 did he work with Pacamara nurseries again, using seeds selected from those earlier seeds that he recognized as Pacamara varietal.

  • WONDERFUL COFFEE (LA MONTANA)

    pgreene | Mon, 07/11/2011 - 19:09

I've tried this 3 times so far, starting around 9 days after roast (est. I didn't see a roast date on the bag - the first cup was OK, lemon and a little bit astringent, I thought it could use some rest but after 9 days? The next day, it was fantastic - same lemon but followed / balanced by a rich sweet flavor and heavy mouth feel. I don't know if it was the extra time or some other variable, I eyeball the amount of water... in any case, it's especially nice coffee, either it needs a long rest, or it's still great after a long rest.

Syrupy kind of fruit, like warmed blueberries or concord grapes. Nice zip. Very good coffee.

  • FULL OF SUNSHINE

    Shawn Steiman | Mon, 08/16/2010 - 04:29

This coffee shines with acidity. In fact, I think, for many people, the acidity level will be too high. Beware!

This coffee isn't all acidity, though. Underneath the glaring sun is some fruity complexity. I found the fruits hard to distinguish but the chase was quite fun.

Excellent cup of coffee. Perfect roast, on the lighter side, no char taste. An all around pleasant and fulfilling cup of coffee.
