Sumatra Mandheling is the quintessential Sumatran coffee, a real classic.

Mandheling is one of the few coffees in the world noted for the name of the people who are primarily responsible for growing and processing it, rather than for the name of its region of origin.  One legend teaches that a Japanese soldier stationed on Sumatra during WWII was drinking a cup of coffee and asked a man about its origin.  The man, confused, thought he was being asked about his own origin, and since he was part of the Mandheling ethnic group, he replied "Mandheling".  Following the war, a Japanese coffee merchant asked where he could buy some "Mandheling" coffee to export, and the rest is history – the name was fixed.
