  • GREAT GRINDER

    avaserfi | Sat, 01/28/2012 - 10:33

I picked up a SJ used a while back on craigslist. They are built like tanks and can grind very well for espresso. They aren't the ideal grinder for someone who wants a single grinder to do it all, but they can be used for such purposes. Personally, I didn't like the doser for home use, so I modified it to work as a doserless model.

Quick, easy and high quality. A great grinder.

  • IF HEIGHT ISN'T AN ISSUE.

    intrepid510 | Mon, 01/16/2012 - 00:07

If you are looking for an espresso grinder and never want to buy another one this is probably your choice. Obviously you need to have the height to have this grinder, as it's footprint isn't huge. These grinders are designed for coffee shops to be used hundreds of times in a day so it will last a lifetime. The 64 mm burrs are also some of the best and make for an excellent well rounded espresso. Good bang for the buck, will probably need to make a few mods to the doser so cleans everything, but thats nothing a google search can't help you with.

  • GREAT!

    samuellaw178 | Sun, 12/25/2011 - 13:13

This is one of the standard grinders in most cafe. It uses 64mm flat burrs which is very good for espresso. Sometimes, you could find these used for a cheaper price. However, a new one would guarantee you good espresso for many years to come. Not to mention a new Super Jolly looks really cool on the counter!

I got to use this a couple of times in a commercial environment. This machine is ubiquitous in the commercial coffee setting. The 64mm burrs create a really even grind without overheating the beans. I was a big fan of this machine's doser because of its durability, access for cleaning, and lack of mess. In the home setting, this machine is a bit overkill. It is massive, but it will provide unparalleled espresso. If you want the most out of your beans, this machine will help you get that much closer.

  • EXCELLENT GRINDER FOR THE MONEY.

If you do a google search, you will find that there is rarely a bad review for the SJ. That should tell you a lot about the capability of this grinder. When I bought my E61 HX machine used, the previous owner also gave me his old grinder. The grinder is a 90-100 watt model made by Fiorenzato and is very well made. Looking at the grind, one gets a feeling that it should be fine for espresso as it is very uniform. Being new to espresso making, I bought a bag of French roast from a major off the shelves brand. I got a lot of channeling and no crema at all, which is understandable given the old roast date typical of supermarket coffee. When I got the SJ, even with the old burr set that has gone through hundreds of pounds of coffee, I was able to get a shot with no channeling with very decent crema. The taste was also much richer than the old grinder. This really made me a believer in the concept of grinder > espresso machine.

Before I got my SJ I worried about the size of it. It's big, but in terms of actual counter size used, not much worse then a blender, smaller than a stand mixer, and I really like it. Goes back and forth between drip and espresso fine - I'm sure a dedicated drip grinder would be better, but we don't have THAT much space. I have a tamper in the throat. For drip I cup a hand around the opening and pour in 60g of beans, put the tamper in before it popcorns, works fine. Put a mouse pad under the feet really cuts the vibration and sound from the counter. I don't use the hopper and took out the finger guard, make sure the burrs stop spinning before you stick anything in there - I use a chopstick and a brush to get out the grounds. Check Home-Barista.com for mods to make the dosser sweep clean.
