GOOD QUALITY MACHINE
pammyjo1 | Fri, 07/08/2011 - 05:22I am new at "real" espresso machines, having used steam cheap ones until now. They are fine for what we like (lots of frothed milk to help us get going really early in the morings, along with the coffee/espresso taste). however, they wear out quickly and the quality of new ones is declining. I decided to invest in a pump machine instead. We tried a different brand briefly before buying Ascaso, but I didn't care AT ALL for the strength or taste compared to the steamed ones--that machine had NO FLAVOR in the coffee at all, so I sent it back. This basic Ascasco has commercial components and heating ability. It comes with a pressurized basket, which makes it harder to "perfect" the espresso taste but helps it be more forgiving of grind. A kit is available for non-pressurized if one wants to experiment later, so it's a win-win machine. So we got the machine yesterday and we do not have a burr grinder or pre-ground espresso just yet, but I tried it with out blade grinder. It tastes wonderful and made a great cup of espresso (but we make lattes or cappichinos or Americanos, so I was drinking it with lots of frothed milk). It does a good job with the milk and the components, such as the steam wand, or so heavy duty compared to what I'm used to! The machine weighs a lot more than cheap coffee machines, too. The only thing I notice I didn't expect is that the water tends to drip from the steam spout and coffee filter basket even after you've shut off the function (steam or brew). This isn't a problem for me--I just leave cups under the spouts until finished. Having extra water and pressure for a change is a lot better than running out before you finish, like with the steam espresso machines. So it's a winner for us and I love the rich taste!!
