  • ETHIOPIAN HARRAR COFFEE

    Tom | Sun, 10/31/2010 - 08:26

I'll say there are not many Ethiopian coffees I don't enjoy ... but this Harrar was excellent. It smelled amazing in the box and in the bag. Even more explosive during the grind! I used this as a pour over in the Hario V60 - and Clever Coffee Dripper ... both amazing. I also pulled it as an espresso and really enjoyed its fruity character. As I said above ... I could smell this coffee from the box and that's because it did not come sealed air tight. I mentioned this in my last Flat Black review but I'll mention it again. This coffee arrived in a paper sack with no roast date. A bit disappointed with their presentation being a micro roaster. That said the coffee was fresh and I did enjoy it quite a bit!

  • INTERESTING MELLOW FLAVOR

    Tom | Sun, 10/31/2010 - 08:19

This was my first experience with a Monsoon Malabar and I enjoyed it's flavor profile. It was a nice mellow flavor that took well to the roast level Flat Black did with it. My coffee arrived quickly but I must say I was shocked to see it come in a non airtight bag (paper rolled and cinched) with no roast date on the bag. It had a nice bloom so I know it was quite fresh but I think they need to work on this bit of the presentation.

  • GOOD FOR A WAKE UP!

    Tom | Sun, 07/25/2010 - 18:04

This blend is a medium roast that is likely to please most people. It arrived just 2 days past roast from Virginia to Pennsylvania. I tried it first on day 3 in a coffee dripper and really enjoyed the bright flavors it produced. I also tried this in a vac pot brewer and again was impressed by the balance of this roast. I also like that it came packaged in a resealable zip bag with air release valve. With such a great price point for a hand crafted product, I'm sure I'll be trying this and other roasts from Mahogany in the future.

  • THEY WERE RIGHT!

    Tom | Sun, 07/25/2010 - 11:43

I've read about how 1. Cool coffee siphon vac pot brewing process was 2. What a great cup of java it would produce! I was not let down on either point. Such a cool device that's easy to use. I used an electric kettle to heat my water which also makes it quite a fast process once you get going. The result was a very smooth brew that I plan on perfecting with each new batch of beans ... varying my grind and timing. I'm sure to impress my dinner guests next time I offer coffee! Shipped quickly West to East Coast via priority mail with no damage. Thanks!

  • A TRUE WINNER FROM ETHIOPIA!

    Tom | Tue, 07/20/2010 - 08:28

I agree with the last review ... this is a 5 bean coffee! First the beans are a nice small to medium size with a fairly lighter roast then I am normally a fan of. The aroma from opening the bag really grabbed me. This fruity chocolate coffee is a nice change and I'm enjoying it as a pour over or in a clever coffee dripper. It arrived from PT's 4 days past roast and it's bloom is very active. Enjoy some while you can! I am.
