About me:

I cofounded ROASTe because I've been a coffee aficionado since I traveled to Seattle in 1991 and heard of a little roaster called Starbucks.

As a customer I've wanted a central destination website for gourmet coffee content, blogging, reviews and ecommerce. Not finding it, I decided to build it with my cofounders!

I've tried everything from Starbucks to Kopi Luwak and coffee from about 300 roasters around the world.

My favorites? Sumatrans that are earthy. Dry naturals of any kind especially Ethiopia and India because I like their unique fruitiness and wildness. Espresso that is so dense it tastes like a milkshake.

I feel that there are hundreds of undiscovered coffee micro-roasters around the US and unique coffee equipment that need national attention.

I earned a BA at Dartmouth College and an MBA at Georgetown University, led a marketing team at Alcatel-Lucent and founded the defense consulting firm DefenseCom.

When not drinking coffee, I'm learning Mandarin, helping grow the new Downtown Boston Rotary Club (that I helped start), staying fit with Crossfit and training my Golden Retriever.

My Equipment:

Espresso machine & grinder

  • TERRIFIC VALUE

    Scott Lush | Fri, 02/03/2012 - 13:18

At $8.99 for a pound this is a great value. It had elements of flavor from citrus, walnut, chocolate and something berry. No bitterness at all. Specifically I pulled a single shot for 7 seconds after the liquid was pouring; this gave me 1 ounce of espresso. It's a pretty amazing value for the price, in my opinion.

  • RICH, TREMENDOUS BODY

    Scott Lush | Tue, 01/31/2012 - 10:38

Tastes like smokey truffle butter -- it's that rich, bold, smooth and full-bodied. Both as drip coffee (in an Aeropress) and in an espresso machine it was fantastic. It has all richness and boldness of a dark-roasted Sumatran without the jungle fungus flavor that is often there in Sumatrans. In other words, it's rich and bold with a very pleasant smokiness. I'd say if you wish Starbucks didn't have bitterness or ashiness and was richer, this is an ideal coffee.

  • SMOOTH, RICH

    Scott Lush | Fri, 01/13/2012 - 16:36

Velvety smooth rich cup of coffee. Nice all-around blend that combines richness with smoothness. I wouldn't call it bold or robust the way Starbucks is. Instead it's a milder smoother cup, medium roasted.

  • DELICIOUS, FULL BODIED

    Scott Lush | Thu, 12/08/2011 - 12:39

Intriguing and enjoyable mix of full body, medium richness and also some light honey sweetness and light floral notes. Really a pleasant coffee with excellent body. Stands up great to milk because of its richness, in my opinion. Like a Sumatran coffee plus interesting additional high notes. If this were a wine it would be a Bordeaux or a Malbec: big body, fully developed complex flavor.

  • I'M GLAD YOU TRIED THAT EXPERIMENT

    Scott Lush | Tue, 11/15/2011 - 10:35

Wakeknot thanks for trying brewing at different temperatures! One of the fun things about coffee is experimenting to see what you get. I think that even the cupping standards of the SCAA (i.e. 8 grams of coffee in 5 ounces of water steeped for 4 minutes) are more meant to create a consistent testing protocol than they are a guideline for getting a great cup of coffee. The great cup of coffee takes experimentation like we're doing :-)
