MY LATEST REVIEWS

  • VERY NICE

    unagi1 | Tue, 03/13/2012 - 18:46

Syrupy and bold, with very little acidity and lots of caramel and vanilla notes to go along with the chocolate. Still my favorite coffee region of origin, giving this one a 5 / 5.

  • HAWAIIAN KA'U

    unagi1 | Tue, 03/13/2012 - 18:29

Notes of strawberry, dark chocolate -- very little honey. Medium body and low acidity, with initial citrus/floral immediately chased by chocolate, caramel, and slight ash. Slight cocoa powder at finish. Really nice, a bit lighter on the chocolate / caramel but slightly heavier body than other Ka'u coffee that I've tasted. Giving this 4 / 5 as it's not the best Ka'u I've had. To address a point from another reviewer, roasters recommend an initial 24-48 hour resting (degas) period after roasting. I've also run a couple instances with Ka'u that you have to give the coffee a few more days to reach it's best flavor. Around 4-5 days after opening has been when I've enjoyed the coffee most. Obviously mileage will vary based on preference...

  • GREAT MOCHA / JAVA BLEND

    unagi1 | Tue, 03/13/2012 - 16:48

I thought the blend was balanced out, you had good acidity / floral notes mixed in with the chocolate and caramel. The mocha presence though seems a bit light for a dark roast, I was expecting more chocolate and caramel flavors than what I experienced. Still very enjoyable, although I do not typically purchase this type of blend.

  • IT'S ALL ABOUT THE FRUIT

    unagi1 | Wed, 09/21/2011 - 23:46

This definitely had the most berry profile that I've ever tasted in a single origin, it's a joy to drink straight w/o adding anything. Mine came out best with siphon but manual pourover turned out nicely as well. In addition to berries and acidity, a good amount of vanilla and cocoa follow through to balance out the flavor profile.

  • STRONG AND SMOOTH

    unagi1 | Wed, 09/21/2011 - 23:34

This blend is a medium-dark roast shot of chocolate with a lot of earth tones and medium to little acidity. In my experience best enjoyed as a manual pourover, although due to the strength of the beans it would make a really strong espresso as well. Definitely a morning coffee. I'm giving it 3.5/5 because it's a really nice blend, but just not comparable in complexity and balance to some of the other 4/5 beans I've been having lately.
