How often do you change coffees in a week?

I notice one major difference between the way that I drink coffee and the way that my wife drinks coffee that I find interesting.  She pointed it out to me the other day when I poured a cup of coffee for her that she really liked – she said “just give me this coffee every day for the rest of my life.”  This is by the way also the way her parents drink coffee and the way my parents tend to drink coffee.  Her parents drink Starbucks Gold Coast blend every day – never anything better, never anything worse, never even another blend from Starbucks.  This is not to say they cannot tell the difference.  The last time they were visiting I made my mother in law a cup of coffee that she was kind enough to call the best cup of coffee she had ever had in her life, but it did not make her rush to change coffees or trade out her superauto coffee maker.

My parents drink even worse coffee and claim to love the coffee I make them, but it does not stop them from returning to bad coffee when they get home.  Now my wife, on the other hand, wants good coffee, but she does not want diversity.  That contrasts with me, where I often want 2-3 different coffees in a given day and certainly do not want the same coffee for a week on end no matter how good it is.

We reflect this a little bit with food.  If I love a dinner I am happy to have it two days in a row, but no matter how great it was I am unlikely to ever want it three days in a row, but my wife would gladly eat the same dinner for a week if it was good.

I also wonder if this is reflected in wine or beer.  Both my parents and hers will drink the same wine for weeks on end (or in her parents’ case years), but I would go crazy drinking the same wine every day for weeks.  I guess I would be willing to commit to an experiment though where I drank the same $100 bottle of wine ever night for a few months if anyone wants to fund it (hey I might even go for the same $20 bottle if donors start lining up).  On the other hand on wine, unlike coffee, my wife falls solidly in my camp.

REVIEWS & COMMENTS

  • I WOULD TRY NEW THING AT EVERY CHANCE

    samuellaw178 | Wed, 02/15/2012 - 00:16

I think I am the person that would try new things at every chance. So far I have been trying all different coffee to develop my palate. But still, I would keep trying different coffee to find out what's out there to satisfy my curiosity

I figured you would be one of the group that changed the most often given the diversity of coffee you post about.

do you tend to stick with one roaster at a time to reduce shipping costs or do you change roasters as you change bags?

Does that mean a pound takes you about two weeks? I get about a week out of a pound.

sounds like an exciting turn of events to change the way you drink coffee at home!

do you use two grinders or do you use the same grinder for drip as espresso?

Good point about single serve I don't know if even the most fanatical whole bean drinker tends to have 16 choices on hand.

that was what I thought I did pretty often, but the more I think about it the more I realize I change more often than I thought.

do you use the pods in a different location than the whole bean or are they all from homer?

I forgot that brewed coffee to espresso counts as a change, not just changing blends for espresso - I do change a lot.

I think I voted for once a day, but in retrospect that underestimates the number of changes I make

I agree that I love changing it up. I probably do it more than I realize. I have already used three blends today between my wife and myself and I expect a fourth on my next pull.

  • DIFFERENT FOLKS, DIFFERENT STROKES?

    Son Ton | Sat, 01/28/2012 - 22:21

I'm guessing different people have different priorities. We coffee enthusiast might tend to over emphasize the importance of coffee?

  • I'LL USUALLY DRINK ONE BAG

    hoonchul | Thu, 01/26/2012 - 01:26

I'll usually drink one bag of 12 oz coffee at a time which tends to last me any where from 7-10 days. I like trying different coffee so I get different bags on every order.

  • I PROBABLY CHANGE ABOUT

    Karrde | Wed, 01/25/2012 - 18:04

I probably change about every two weeks depending on the amount I get and if I happen to overestimate (or underestimate) how long it will last me.

  • NOT CHANGING OFTEN NOW

    avaserfi | Tue, 01/24/2012 - 17:48

Right now, I haven't been changing coffee too often at home, but am working on changing that. On the rare occasion I go to a coffee bar, I like to try a few of their offerings, but have been hesitant to stock up at home. No more!

  • CHANGE

    yeahyeah | Tue, 01/24/2012 - 17:22

I generally change coffee about once per week. Sometimes I will have two coffees in the same week if I alternate between drip and espresso .

  • ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF WHY I

    GmanJenks | Tue, 01/24/2012 - 14:03

Another example of why I love my single serve brewers. I tend to drink a different variety just about every cup all day long. That is unless I have some time to sit and relax I will break out the siphon and make a "pot".
I currently only have one type of whole bean on hand but have no fewer than 16 single serve options, not counting my wife's flavored options (yuck).

Would I be the same way without single serve? Not likely, maybe one or 2 types on hand but that would be it.

  • MODERATE VARIETY HERE, IN

    intrepid510 | Tue, 01/24/2012 - 13:50

Moderate variety here, in everything. I generally like having one coffee a week and then change it the next week, and then after a while I come back to a coffee I really liked. As far as food I could eat the same things day after day without fail that's how it was in bachelor days, drives my wife crazy when she asks what I want for dinner during the week.

  • IT VARIES [PUN INTENDED]

    jbviau | Tue, 01/24/2012 - 13:40

But on average I've got one or two varieties of fresh whole bean on hand at any given time, and I'll mix in a pod or k-cup about once a day.

  • SWITCH IT UP

    Steve Rhinehart | Tue, 01/24/2012 - 13:00

Considering I brew espresso and Aeropress every day without fail, and often do a pour-over when I get home from work, yeah I switch beans a lot! I usually have two espresso blends on hand that I'll alternate (frozen in small batches), and I run one bean/blend for AP and drip. Unless, of course, I've roasted something new or special, in which case I'm enjoying up to four different coffees at one time. Variety is delicious!

  • THE SPICE OF LIFE

    EricBNC | Tue, 01/24/2012 - 12:12

No surprise probably but I voted in the "change several times a day" group - I like trying different coffees.

  • GIVE ME VARIETY!

    Chamie | Tue, 01/24/2012 - 12:01

I could never pick a "best coffee evah!" My tastes vary from day to day and even from hour to hour. If I drink the same coffee for a few days at a time, it's because that's what I have in the house. One of the biggest reasons for my attraction to single serve coffee makers, -- maybe the only real one, in fact -- is how easy it is to switch up my coffee and drink what I feel like drinking right now. Even if I'm drinking the same coffee for a few days running, though, I tend to vary the brewing method -- moka pot in the morning, espresso midmorning, drip in the afternoon, another espresso after dinner. Good observation and question!
