[Survey]How much coffee do you drink per day?
I posted an entry about coffee experiment recently. From the feedback, it seems that I am using too little coffee in the experiment. For me, that was my normal dose of coffee in brewing so I thought that best relevant amount. This got me thinking though, how much coffee does people usually drink/consume here?Or what's the normal dose for a cup of brewed coffee?
In one of the articles I've read before, it was recommended that a person drink 2-4 cups maximum in a day. Any more than that is probably a little more than 'moderate' and it's not too good to the body. It might cause insomnia, jittery, restlessness etc etc if you overconsume. I truly believe that while caffeine is a stimulant that keeps you awake, it probably will never replace the sleep you lost at night. So because of that, I only drink coffee because I enjoy it, not to get caffeinated. And of course, there're also other factors than the caffeine that we should be concerned about to moderate our coffee consumption.
Anyway, according to the Wikipedia, 1 cup of brewed coffee is about 7oz, which requires about 14g of coffee ground if you’re using 1:15(coffee:water) ratio. While one shot of espresso(double shot in the wiki), will require roughly about 14g coffee too. This means that the maximum recommended coffee weight consumed per day is about 14g x 4 =58g daily. And that could be translated into 4 espressi (~3 if you use high dose), 3 espressi & 7oz brewed coffee, 2 espressi & 14 oz brewed coffee, 1 espresso & 21oz brewed coffee or just 28oz brewed coffee. Doesn't seem like a lot eh? Do keep in mind that these numbers are approximate for this purpose and the caffeine tolerance might be different for different individual.
As for my drinking consumption, I normally start off my morning with 1 single espresso(9g coffee), another 1 shot later morning. Then 1 single-shot cappuccino in the afternoon and finally brewed coffee about 5-7oz in the late evening. But my actual coffee consumption pattern fluctuates a lot throughout the months. There’re also many times when I don’t drink at all in a day or just one single shot espresso a day. The main point is, it's the best way for me to brew a small amount and drink throughout the day, rather than finishing up my daily caffeine allocation in 1-2 go.
So I am curious, how much coffee do you guys drink per day?Let’s have it in this format:
I drink:
Coffee weight used for espresso/espresso-based: 9g x 3 =27g
Coffee weight used for brewed coffee: 11g
Total : ~38g/day

REVIEWS & COMMENTS
GREAT QUESTION
Wakeknot | Wed, 01/11/2012 - 21:20I drink at least one double shot of espresso a day and rarely drink more than 3, but 3 is the norm and when experimenting I sometimes drink a lot more, but that is rare - usually if I am dialing in an espresso, for example, I do not drink the entire shot until I pull the last one. I guess in terms of grams I am around 50g per day.

samuellaw178 | Fri, 12/30/2011 - 01:12That's not too bad at all. I would imagine myself using different amount of coffee depending on what machine I use. Thanks for sharing!
MY COFFEE CONSUMPTION
Son Ton | Fri, 12/30/2011 - 00:47My coffee consumption varies day to day and depend on which espresso machine I use that day for instance the Nuova simonelli use 58mm portafilter and thus need more coffee to produce a double shot than say the La Pavoni which has 49mm portafilter but typically it would be like this:
15g coffee (average) x 4 shots= 60 grams (total)
NORMALLY I AM IN THE THREE
intrepid510 | Tue, 12/27/2011 - 17:56Normally I am in the three to four range, while your experiment may have been what is best for you that was not how they were designed to be used, so you are going to get results that are not typical to normal use.
I HAVE ABOUT 17-20G PER DAY.
Karrde | Mon, 12/26/2011 - 15:51I have about 17-20g per day. Looks like I'm on the low end here and I'm ok with that. :)
HOW MUCH?
yeahyeah | Mon, 12/26/2011 - 13:45I typically drink only espresso or only brewed coffee on any given day. On espresso days I usually drink 2x16g, or 32g/day. On days that I drink brewed coffee I average about 48 g/day.

samuellaw178 | Mon, 12/26/2011 - 11:41Hahahaha. That's humorous! No info is TMI, I like all of them,keep'em coming! :P You really have a lot of coffee per day. But you're roasting at home, so that's a good thing. More coffee consumed = more coffee to roast = more fun along the way! And you have people in your house/friends to share the great coffees you make. That's what coffee is about. Sharing the fun and having fun! I wish I can convert those around me into coffee enthusiast too, not just cappuccino drinker. Hahaha!
@CHAMIE
samuellaw178 | Mon, 12/26/2011 - 11:354-5 cups a day isn't too bad per se. It's still within the recommended range I would say. PLus, you're a long-time coffee drinker so I am sure your body is used to that level of consumption. So don't worry about it. Quote Eval, brew on!
@HOONCHUL
samuellaw178 | Mon, 12/26/2011 - 11:33That's pretty light coffee consumption! But it's all good. Less is more sometimes. Keep it up!
@Eval: Thank you!I really like it! I wanted to put something like that but have no idea how to do it. You did exactly what I want and it's perfect!
@GMANJENKS
samuellaw178 | Mon, 12/26/2011 - 11:32Yeah, I know right. Especially wen a new equipment comes, it's experiment time! I tend to get over-caffeinated when that happened! It is so fun with coffee this way, you can't do the same to tea.
@Jbviau: Thanks for sharing your drinking pattern! Yeah, 4oz is a on the small side. But it's twice the fun than making 8 oz in one go! Plus I got 5oz cup which is perfect for drinking from 4oz. =P I guess maybe one of the reason I am making such small batches is that I don't have anyone around me that drinks brewed coffee. The only thing they like is cappuccino/ latte. I guess if there's anyone in my household that shares the same enthusiasm as me, it would be a different story!
NEVER ENOUGH
EricBNC | Mon, 12/26/2011 - 09:36If I take the time to heat my machine I will take the time to enjoy some coffee - usually 3 or 4 17 - 18g double shots depending how they are pulling at the time. I will make at least one 60g pot or two 30g pots of auto drip to share - or one small pot and a couple pods/K-cups if I am the only one drinking what I make. If I play around with French press, Aeropress, or pour over then the auto drip or pod number will be smaller. What's that then - 120g give or take a cup when the mood hits - I limit my coffee only when I know I will not have access to a bathroom for an extended period of time. TMI? - probably...
ALL DAY
Chamie | Mon, 12/26/2011 - 08:23I'm an all day coffee drinker. The amount I drink varies but usually falls in the 4-5 cups a day range. I don't feel like my day is started until I have a fresh coffee in my hand, and I frequently have a last cup late in the evening.
POLL WIDGET
Eyal Rosen | Sun, 01/01/2012 - 05:08Intriguing! To make this fun, I added a poll widget. (Samuel - feel free to delete it of course if you do not like it).
You can add polls to your blogs too:
1. Go here: http://www.widgetbox.com/widget/poll-pro/
2. In the blog's edit mode, set the input format to be "Full HTML"

NORMALLY I'LL MAKE
hoonchul | Mon, 12/26/2011 - 03:01Normally I'll make cappuccino with double shot of espresso and singe shot espresso few hours later if I have time.
IT VARIES
jbviau | Mon, 12/26/2011 - 01:23Like you, there are days when my consumption is very light. With espresso, for example, I rarely pull shots lately, though I expect that to change after a few months. Usually, I'd say I brew 30 g. of coffee to yield 15 oz. or so in my Eva Solo in the a.m.; of those 15 oz., I probably drink 8-12. In the p.m., I'll often do 7 oz. of coffee made using a pod or k-cup (which contain 10-12 g., let's say, though that can vary) or instead maybe 6 oz. of coffee made using the Aeropress, in which case my dose is 15 g. Before, you were talking about making 4 oz. of coffee in a press--that's an unusually small batch no matter how much coffee you use to brew it!
4 TO 6 AT LEAST
GmanJenks | Mon, 12/26/2011 - 01:10I can't think of a recent day that I didn't have at least 4 to 6 8oz cups of brewed coffee.
I expect that to be even higher in the next few days as I experiment with the Bodum Santos siphon brewer I received for Christmas.
