New year resolution!!
When it’s the end of the year, we often look back at what we’ve done in the past year and then set up new resolution(s) for the coming year. That could be related to academics, relationships, family, works, and of course, coffee! I am not sure who actually had a resolution for coffee, but I do!! Haha. But of course it’s only a small part of my many resolutions. The most important one being able to graduate in time with my thesis as well as to find a great job right after my graduation! So what goal did I set for coffee this year?
Well, one of the 'dreams' I’ve always had is to be able to be a great coffee taster. This means that I could taste the defects, the nuances, the goods in the coffee and be able to articulate it. Right now, I can only say that I am at the stage of just getting ready with my sneakers. There’s a long whole road journey awaits me ahead!
Like most people, I could tell a shot is weak/watery, bitter because of high temperature, able to tell and recognize the distinctive earthiness of Sumatra. And thanks to ROASTe's coffee variation, I think I’ve recognized “berries” from Ethiopian Gedeo Worka and 'cherries' from El Salvador El Carrizal. One of the few feats I considered myself achieved this year was to be able to pick the nuance from an espresso blend: Gedeo Worka’s berries flavor from Klatch's World Best Espresso, and the earthiness of Sumatra from Vivace’s Dolce. It might seem trivial to some of you but it's a huge step for me! So in the next coming year, I am hoping to be able to taste more of these and to recognize them.
Other than to develop my taste palate, I am also hoping to be able to steam much better on the 4 hole tips on my Cremina. I’ve spent literally gallons of cold water with dish detergent, trying to improve my steaming skill but to no avail. I guess I will give it another few training sessions to overcome that.
And lastly, I am hoping to introduce more of my friends into good coffee! Some of them actually do drink coffee, but they drink it more for the jolt rather than the taste itself. To me, this is a waste because coffee can actually taste very good and not just a morning jolt!
So what’s your coffee resolution for this year? Oh, and a late Happy New Year to everyone on ROASTe!!
By the way, I was just back from Philladelphia for new year countdown. It was the best 15-minute firework I've ever seen! The photo doesn't even do enough justice to the experience itself!

REVIEWS & COMMENTS
BRILLIANT
Wakeknot | Wed, 01/18/2012 - 21:49I love your resolutions. becoming a better taster is always a goal for me, so I guess I could call it a resolution, too.
@SON TON
samuellaw178 | Wed, 01/04/2012 - 00:59Thanks for the tips! Indeed, I've tried 1 hole and like it very much. But it's kinda too slow in comparison for my liking. I am still not giving up on the 4 holes. hahaha

GOOD RESOLUTION!
Son Ton | Tue, 01/03/2012 - 15:19I think a lot of coffee lovers on here also share the same new year resolutions as yours. And good luck with steaming! I find that with my Pavoni, a one hole steaming tip helped tremendously; may be something you can try with your cremina.
RESOLUTION
yeahyeah | Mon, 01/02/2012 - 19:23I'd like to be able to better articulate what it is that I like or dislike about different coffees.
MY GOAL/RESOLUTION IS TO
hoonchul | Mon, 01/02/2012 - 18:00My goal/resolution is to upgrade my gear(grinder/espresso machine) by the end of this year. And of course try different coffee as much as I can.
I DON'T KNOW THAT IT'S A
Karrde | Mon, 01/02/2012 - 15:14I don't know that it's a resolution per say, but I'll definitely be trying more varieties of coffee this year. :)
PALETTE REFINEMENT
GmanJenks | Mon, 01/02/2012 - 12:51I too have made a resolution to refine my palette and be able to properly assess and cup coffees.
I have discovered that a local Italian grocery company has started more specialty roasting and has even started offering cupping classes. They don`t have any dates for them yet but I am on the list for when they decide they are going to run another session.
All the best to everyone on ROASTe, I truly enjoy reading your personal coffee journeys.
CHEERS
jbviau | Mon, 01/02/2012 - 10:17Happy 2012 to you, too! No coffee-related resolutions for me. I suppose I should try to acquire less gear and use what I have more instead, but it's hard to resist buying just one more brewer/grinder/etc. Your goal of becoming a super-taster is admirable; as an added perk, the training will be tasty!
THANKS FOR THE BEST WISHES
Eyal Rosen | Mon, 01/02/2012 - 05:33Happy new year - brew on!
MORE COFFEE
EricBNC | Mon, 01/02/2012 - 03:17I feel like it is time to step up my game - I think I can hit 200 grams a day with practice - is coffee drinking an Olympic sport yet?
YEAH JUST TRYING MORE
intrepid510 | Mon, 01/02/2012 - 02:14Yeah just trying more coffees really help in being able to detect different tastes and i find that brewed coffee is easier than express.
