"Camping" coffee?

My drip coffee maker stopped working. Waah! Since I do not have any other coffee makers (my french press broke) I was not sure what alternatives I had. I remembered reading articles about "camping" coffee so looked online and deciced to try it at home. All articles made a point of saying not to let the water boil but were split on whether or not to put the ground coffee in the pot while heating the water or wait until it was already warm. I chose to put the grounds in while heating.

I used bottled water and filled the coffee carafe up to twelve. Put that in the pan and added seven scoops of coffee to it. Then I heated it on a medium flame (checking the water temperature with a thermometer). When the water temp reached between 195 and 200 (F) I turned off the heat, stirred the coffee and covered for ten minutes.

It actually did not taste too bad. It did taste different. I was expecting it to be bitter or weak but it was not. Going to have to experiment more to see if waiting to add the ground until the water is warm makes the flavor different.

Any suggestions?

It's too bad that your drip machine is broken. Unfortunately, I've never tried this method before. My advise is to get more coffee brewer as back up! hahaha :P

sounds rustic - would you use this method again even if you could use something else?

  • I WOULD GUESS

that you could make dramatic improvement by doing as Son Ton suggests and adding the coffee after the water comes off a boil, but I'd be very interested in what you find out since I have not tried it both ways.

I would suggest you do the following: heat a water to a boil. then take it off the stove for about a minute for it to cool down. add your coffee ground course, stir, wait 4 minutes, and filter.

  • MY GUESS IS THAT YOU SHOULD

My guess is that you should notice a huge difference in the taste of adding it once warm vs. adding it when cold->warm. Even minor variations in temperature and time make a big difference in taste.

  • "CAMPING" COFFEE

    Lisa | Wed, 01/25/2012 - 14:25

Sorry I left the straining part out. I have a gold mesh strainer that I used. I put the strainer on the carafe and poured in very carefully. It is ground for "drip" (I had to grind it at the store since my coffee grinder is acting up too!).

  • COFFEE ON THE STOVE

I love making coffee on the stove -- it's got such a mellow flavor. Like Josh, I'm wondering how you filtered it. I generally pour mine through a wire sieve lined with a non-terry dish towel. You might also try cold-brewing with my totally ghetto method: Dump two cups of coffee (drip grind works fine, but you can use a finer grind, too) into a 2-quart pitcher. Add cold water to fill the pitcher. Stir it up really well. Cover and stick it in the refrigerator for 6 hours or so -- overnight works fine, too. In the morning, strain the coffee through a colander lined with cloth (double cheesecloth works. so does a non-fuzzy dish towel). The coffee is super concentrated. If you like regular drip coffee, mix it half and half with boiling water, add your milk and sugar as you like it, and enjoy. If you like espresso, heat it up as is. Stick the rest back in the fridge, covered. I hear it will taste good for up to a week, but honestly, it never lasts more than a day in our fridge.

  • JUST CURIOUS

What coffee/grind did you use? And how did you filter this? I'm always up for experimenting, in general. You might consider getting a Clever dripper--won't break the bank.

  • OH YEAH COWBOY COFFEE IS NOT

    intrepid510 | Wed, 01/25/2012 - 13:47

Oh yeah cowboy coffee is not bad at all, just a french press. Does your auto drip cone have a stopper in it if the carafe is not underneath? If it does have the stopper you could use it like a clever dripper, if it doesnt then you could use it like a manual pour over!
