Grinderless, Thinking About Coffee Rituals
As I have mentioned in a few past blog posts, I am currently in the middle of an upgrade and this has left me grinderless. I sold my old grinder far more quickly than I expected and am still waiting on the replacement to arrive. At the same time, I just got a new espresso machine. So, for the past week or so, I have had the best espresso machine I could want and no grinder to use it! This means, I have not really been drinking coffee for the past week. The lack of freshly ground coffee has really put my coffee drinking habits into perspective.
Coffee has really changed my day and how I spend certain parts of it. My morning ritual of brewing has brought my wife and I closer together. Our working lives prevent us from spending a lot of time together and the morning coffee is one of those places we have cleared. Same thing goes for the occasional evening coffee. We spend the time enjoying our coffee and company as we catch up through quality time. As soon as we lost access to the fresh brew coffee, the time disappeared. We just found other things that we needed to do, but we both miss the time and the coffee.
Whatever the case, as I wait for the new grinder (Baratza Vario) I have been studying intently and really getting into Roaste. As soon as that grinder arrives, I will be all over brewing coffee after coffee. I think it is pretty clear, I cannot wait to get the Vario and get back to my regular routine especially with the Expobar Brewtus taunting me as it sits unused! I've also noticed this lack of a grinder has encouraged me to spend more time reading (maybe lusting) over coffee online...
Have you developed (un)knowing coffee rituals as a side effect of your interest in coffee? Do you care to share it?

REVIEWS & COMMENTS
WOW
Wakeknot | Thu, 02/09/2012 - 21:20that is tough having a Brewtus and no grinder. You are indeed being taunted. I can relate though as my T1 came and it took a few weeks to get it plumbed in so it taunted me, too.
I FEEL FOR YOU!
Son Ton | Fri, 02/03/2012 - 03:47I feel for your pain. I have been in that situation before in the past. But now it no longer happen as I have many grinders, I have a backup grinder for my backup grinder :-) I even have a hand grinder just in case the electricity fail!
AMAZING
avaserfi | Thu, 02/02/2012 - 12:57It really is amazing how the small pleasures affect our lives. Of course, you never realize how they do until they are gone. The new grinder comes today and I can't wait!
I KNOW WHAT YOUR GOING
hoonchul | Thu, 02/02/2012 - 12:36I know what your going through, kind of. I ran out of beans for few days and had to use preground coffee I got from target in my press. Boy was I happy when my fresh beans arrived.
MISSING MY ESPRESSO
Chamie | Thu, 02/02/2012 - 09:04I have to admit I got spoiled awfully quickly when I got the new espresso machine in January -- brewed coffee just doesn't do it for me in the same way, and it's as much in the ritual of grinding, tamping, steaming and making a cappa as it is in the taste of the coffee. So when it inexplicably stopped working Saturday, I was lost. I miss my espresso ritual, and can't seem to really get started on my morning without it. I'm currently looking for my warranty card -- Electra-craft tells me that this is the first time they've heard of any problems with the pump, gave me instructions on priming it and told me to ship it back to them and they'd take a look, but of course, disorganized me probably threw the warranty card out when cleaning off my desk -- doh! I'm about to take a screwdriver to it myself to see if I can figure out the issue myself. Meanwhile, I'm about to make myself a moka pot coffee, which is better than no coffee at all.
THE ONLY RITUAL I TEND TO
Karrde | Tue, 01/31/2012 - 18:03The only ritual I tend to have is that I have coffee nearly every day. I like to experiment with the actual brewing methods. :)
BROKE DOWN
avaserfi | Tue, 01/31/2012 - 14:30Just got word that the grinder may have shipped today. Basically, I'm getting hit by the Baratza back order ont eh vario. Rough. I did break down and buy a Skerton today, it should be here Thursday. I need my fix....
WELL NO REAL RITUALS REALLY,
intrepid510 | Tue, 01/31/2012 - 13:48Well no real rituals really, however I am tempted to pick up another grinder just in case god forbid mine were ever to go down. A day or two without coffee is not a big deal, but a week would hard and I might just have to go out and buy a blade grinder!
OUCH
jbviau | Tue, 01/31/2012 - 10:21A week without coffee is a long time! Did the Vario ship yet? I know Baratza was backlogged recently. I have a quick grinder cleaning ritual I do after each use that I've posted about; the consensus was that it was a touch overkill IIRC. This week I've been pulling a shot or two every morning first thing, which is much more than average since I generally favor brewed over espresso--time will tell if this becomes a ritual, too, I guess!
